How to use baby diapers correctly?
Whether you've never changed a diaper before, or you're a veteran, you'll have plenty of practice with your new baby. Most parents have made common mistakes like turning the diaper upside down or on the side, or even accidentally squirting urine from their baby boy. These step-by-step tips will help you master the art of changing diapers and quickly correct any first-time mistakes. Prepare
Wash your hands and dry them, or clean with hand sanitizer or baby wipes.
Set up a warm, clean area to change your baby's diaper. If you don't use a changing table, consider spreading a blanket, towel, or changing pad on the floor or bed.
Have your supplies ready, including clean diapers and plenty of wipes or damp cloths. For babies with sensitive skin, you can use warm water and shredded paper towels (use thick paper towels) or washable cloth baby wipes (you can buy or make your own).
Safety Note: If you are changing your baby on a high place like a changing table or bed, be sure to keep one hand on your baby at all times. Most changing tables have a strap that you can use to secure your baby. Whether your baby is buckled up or not, never leave your baby unattended for even a second. Babies of any age can climb off the table when you least expect it.

1. Open a new, clean diaper and place the back half (the part with the tabs on both sides) under your baby. The top of the back half should reach your baby's waist. Now clean diapers are ready to protect your changing table from messes. (If your baby's dirty diaper is a mess, you may want to spread a cloth, towel, or disposable pad under your baby instead of using a clean diaper when you clean up.)
2. Untie the tab on the soiled diaper. To prevent them from sticking to your baby, fold them up.
3. Pull off the front half of the soiled diaper. If your baby is a boy, you may want to cover his penis with a clean cloth or other diaper so he doesn't pee on both of you.
4. If there is poo in the diaper, use the front half of the diaper to wipe most of the poo off your baby's bottom.
5. Fold the soiled diaper in half under baby, with the clean side facing up. (This provides a layer of protection between the clean diaper and your baby's dirty bottom.) To do this, grab your baby's ankles with one hand and gently lift up, lifting your baby's bottom off the table.
6. Clean baby's front with damp baby wipes, cloth or gauze. Pull the front half of the clean diaper over your baby's tummy. (Always wipe girls from front to back to avoid UTIs and other infections.) If you're changing a baby boy, you'll want to cover the baby's penis with a diaper (or cloth) to protect yourself and other bystanders. You never know when nature will call, and sometimes the cool air outside can trigger a need!
7. If your baby poops, get another rag to clean her bottom. You can lift her leg, or gently roll her to one side and then the other. Be sure to clean the creases of your baby's thighs and buttocks.
8. Allow your baby's skin to air dry for a while, or pat dry with a clean cloth. To help treat or prevent diaper rash, you may need a rash ointment or petroleum jelly. (The best way to prevent diaper rash is to keep your bottom dry by doing regular checks and changing diapers.)
9. Remove the soiled diaper and set aside. If you followed step one, the clean one should be under your baby and ready to use.
10. If your baby is a newborn, avoid covering the umbilical stump until it has dried and fallen off. You can buy special disposable diapers that have a notch cut out for the stump, or you can fold the front half of a regular diaper over.
11. Make sure the part of the diaper between your baby's legs is spread out as wide as possible to look comfortable. Too much bunching in this area can cause chafing and discomfort.
12. Secure the sides of the diaper with tabs. Diapers should fit snugly but not so tight that they get caught. Make sure the label is not stuck to your baby's skin.
13. Check to make sure the diaper completely covers baby's bottom and is not too tight around the legs or belly area. Make sure the edges of the diaper are not tucked in.
14. Everything has changed!
15. Get baby dressed and put her in a safe place—like the floor with the toys, or in her crib—while cleaning up the changing area.
16. Dispose of soiled diapers and wash hands.
