Gester Instruments Elmendorf Tear Tester
Gester Instruments provides a rapid and precise way to evaluate the tear resistance of sheet materials including paper, textiles, roofing products, plastic film, and foils.
The electronic model features a touch-screen panel that allows for a simple one-touch process to run tear tests and track data. Two different pendulums are available with various augmenting weights and can be configured to meet capacities from 200g-12,800g. MAP4 Software can be used to evaluate the sample test results with dynamic tear data calculated at every point of the test to allow for real-time data as the sample tears.
Adheres to Industry Quality Standards:
ASTM D295, D752, D4247, D1424, D1922, D5734
TAPPI T414, T496
BS 2782, 4253, 4468
CPPA D.9
DIN 53862, 53128
ISO 1974,6383-2, 9290, 13937-1
EN21974
SCAN P11
Can also be ordered with the Spencer Impact Attachment for ASTM D3420-94
**Test results should fall between 20% and 80% of your pendulum capacity. For example, if you are using a 1600 gram pendulum, you should expect to get tear results between 1280 grams and 320 grams**
The electronic model provides several enhancements over the mechanical model. All test results and statistics are calculated automatically and displayed on the touch-screen and you can print or connect to a computer for more extensive data analysis using MAP4 testing software.
The control panel provides one-touch clamping and test capabilities. Other functions include data entry of sample information such as sample ID, thickness, basis weight, sample direction and number of plies being torn. The "Units" key enables the simple configuration of result units.

Operation of elmendorf tear tester
The operation of the Gester Instruments is easy —simply secure the sample in the clamps, make an initial tear and press test to release the pendulum. The tearing resistance of the material is measured via the transference of the potential energy stored in the raised pendulum to kinetic energy. A portion of this energy is absorbed during the tearing of the sample and is used as a measure of the resistance of the material to a continuing tear. The energy required to tear the sample is reported as a percentage of the pendulum capacity or force.
The Electronic Gester Instruments calculates all test results and statistics automatically and displays them immediately. Data can be exported to a PC, directly printed or analyzed in more depth using MAP4 materials testing software.
Precision and accuracy are increased by capturing dynamic tear data in real-time digitally. The capacity can be changed quickly with easy-mount technology for pendulum installation that does not require tools. Testing capacity ranges from 200g up to 12,800g allowing for a variety of applications with one machine.
The touch-screen display allows for quick clamping and testing. Lab technicians can easily customize units of measurement and reporting styles in the menu. Other functions include data entry of sample information such as sample ID, thickness, basis weight, sample direction and number of plies being torn.
Test Results include tear strength, tear per ply, average tear strength and tear index
Quickly enter sample data — thickness, basis weight, sample ID, sample direction
Configurable display — test parameters, results, and reports
Obtain results as percent of pendulum capacity, grams, pounds or millinewtons
Calculated Statistics — average, high, low, standard deviation, range & variance
Configurable reports
The Automatic Pendulum Return is an optional for Gester Instruments Elmendorf Tear Testers. This optional feature enhances the capability of the instrument by automatically returning the pendulum to the start position after a test is complete. Now you can eliminate the need for the operator to "catch" the pendulum on the backswing and manually reset for each test. In turn this reduces the chance of injury and fatigue to the operator especially when performing a high volume of testing.
